I want to propose a mass renaming of ALL Chinese train stations - how do I do so?[edit]

Since the WP:COMMONNAME of Chinese train stations is now the pinyin of the cardinal direction rather than the cardinal direction (e.g. "Hangzhoudong Railway Station" instead of "Hangzhou East railway station", "Shanghainan Railway Station" instead of "Shanghai South railway station"), I would like to move all the articles of train stations across China as such. However, there must be thousands of articles that I would have to change. Where can I propose this change? Félix An (talk) 01:11, 24 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

An RFC is probably your best bet. You might want to notify relevant Wikiprojects like WikiProject Trains or WikiProject China. Alternatively, if you're 100% sure that it's not controversial, you could use {{subst:requested move}}; the documentation has more information on how to do multiple pages. —Tenryuu 🐲 ( 💬 • 📝 ) 02:33, 24 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Félix An, maybe I was sleepy, but it took me some time to work out what you were saying. But I imagine that you mean this: "Since the English name used by China Railway for any Chinese train station consisting of a place name plus cardinal direction now doesn't use the place name in pinyin plus a cardinal direction in English (such as 'Hangzhou East railway station') but instead renders the cardinal direction too in pinyin (such as 'Hangzhoudong railway station'), ..." I suppose you'll either have to provide evidence that the latter really are the common names, or have to argue that one or more other factors should outweigh the criterion of commonness. -- Hoary (talk) 04:32, 24 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
That's interesting, but likely controversial, especially when there are Chinese OTAs such as trip.com are using the English cardinal directions rather than pinyin. Do open a discussion first before doing or requesting for the mass move. Using the Chinese cardinal directions is definitely WP:OFFICIAL at the very least though, as reflected on the 12306 app. – robertsky (talk) 06:12, 24 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I see that Brussels-midi is a redirect to Brussels-South railway station, but Paris Gare du Nord is a redirect to Gare du Nord, so there's no consistent policy here. (There are direct trains to both from London. In my experience my fellow Brits refer to them by their French names.) Maproom (talk) 06:18, 24 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I don't think this is going to go through, but generally you'd want to make a post on WP:NCZH, MOS:ZH, or both. Remsense 06:22, 24 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

    Source Reliability[edit]

Hi all, I'm working on a draft for a grade-II listed factory (here for anybody interested). I was wondering if someone could look at this pdf source and give their thoughts on its reliability. It covers events which are otherwise difficult to find elsewhere, but editorial oversight and the company's incentives to produce the report are questionable. Pahunkat (talk) 22:45, 24 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Biased sources can still be reliable for facts. Section 6, which lays out the consultancy's argumentation regarding development of the site, is probably too biased to cite, but the rest of the report doesn't seem problematic in my opinion. Folly Mox (talk) 23:16, 24 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

How does one add a Wikipedia entry for, say, a new book series or its fictional characters? 92.25.136.63 (talk) 01:59, 25 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Does the book/series meet these guidelines for inclusion? Zanahary (talk) 02:16, 25 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Fictional characters are notable only when reliable, published sources that are entirely independent of the book, the author and the publisher devote significant attention to the fictional character. Not passing mentions, but delving deeply. Cullen328 (talk) 04:16, 25 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

    I need help from a Wikitable wizard[edit]

    Hello!
I'm working on Sikidy and want to copy a table from a source. The table has some complicated headers, with some nesting. Would anyone be willing to help me out with them? I can't seem to figure out how to do them. Below are the header rows alone (which in the wikitable I would want to all be shaded dark, as headers are)

Thank you very much! Zanahary (talk) 02:15, 25 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

With visual editing, you'll need to have a 3×5 header, and select the cells to be merged to form the long cells. As for shading, switch to source editing and change "|" of each cell to "!". You can copy the following table:

What should this article's title be?[edit]

Hi there, I want to write an article about Komatsu's surface mining excavators, however, am unsure what to name the article title. The model series starts from PC2000 and goes to PC8000. Why can't I name it Komatsu PC-series excavators? Because all of their other models use the PC prefix, except for their surface mining excavators all models are numbers in the thousands. Any suggestions? Best, X750. Spin a yarn? Articles I've screwed over? 05:58, 25 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@X750: Komatsu just calls them "Surface mining excavators" at https://www.komatsu.com/en/products/excavators/surface-mining-excavators/. "Komatsu surface mining excavators" has no Google hits but I cannot think of a better name when they have many other excavators with PC numbers. PrimeHunter (talk) 10:06, 25 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
PrimeHunter I was thinking of doing something similar to how nVidia has their GeForce 10 series, because whilst you're right that Komatsu surface mining excavators is a unique term, I'm not entirely comfortable with it being a non-specific term (other companies such as Caterpillar offer surface excavators too), I was thinking something along the lines of "Komatsu PC-xxxx series", with something better in place of the "xxxx" placeholder in the title. Do you kind of understand what I'm getting at? All else fails, I can just fall back on your suggestion. Best, X750. Spin a yarn? Articles I've screwed over? 10:41, 25 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@X750: I don't think "Komatsu surface mining excavators" implies that only Komatsu makes surface mining excavators. I think a PC name for the series should only be used if Komatsu or reliable sources use it. Is it even described as a "series" by anyone? PrimeHunter (talk) 12:32, 25 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
PrimeHunter I'm not sure, I am now more leaning towards your suggestion. Thanks for the input. Best, X750. Spin a yarn? Articles I've screwed over? 07:52, 26 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

How to upload a photo while editing[edit]

I was editing a page related to the Kanker State. I have the ohoto of the last ruler of the state and want to upload it. I am his grandson and it is a family photo owned by me. I am not being able to upload the photo. Please guide/assist. Adityakanker (talk) 06:49, 25 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

See WP:UPIMAGE. The main issue is copyright, because unless you took the photo yourself or had permission from the person who did, it might not be suitable, although it could have a fair use rationale.--♦IanMacM♦ (talk to me) 07:04, 25 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
If you have evidence that the photo was taken before 1929, then it's no longer protected by copyright, and you can upload it to Commons. You'll need to convince them of its date.
If after 1929, then you'll need permission from the current copyright-holder to upload it to Commons. I presume you don't know who that is, so you won't be able to upload it there. But you may be able upload a "fair-use" reduced-resolution version of it here on Englisj-language Wikipedia. Maproom (talk) 11:38, 25 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Using the Wayback Machine for references[edit]

Hello, I haven't created any articles for some time and on my return I had to realise that you've made a major change in regards to what references have to look like. When I checked out if a website I wanted to use as reference was archived, I received the answer I had just archived it myself. But I didn't get that long number that you demand here as part of the archived link. Where is that number? Where do I get it? Do I need to register with the Internet Archive? Please answer to my talk page NordhornerII, thank you. NordhornerII (talk) 22:46, 25 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Not a complete, or completely apposite, answer, but note that no references have to include a link at all. Links are a bonus convenience for readers, but offline references are perfectly acceptable (a great deal of information has never been put online) so traditional bibliographic (or analagous) details are sufficient.
If the information you want to reference is on a website, (a) is that website a Reliable source, and (b) where did the website get it? The answer to (b) may be a preferable source (if Reliable). A website that is the true original source of information may be Primary, which is also less desirable. Goatdonkey, your question referred to "a page". It would be easier to answer if we knew what page that was, hence RudolfRed's response. Maproom (talk) 08:30, 26 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I was on page for “The Paris Murders” tv program, redirected to the French name of the show. At the top of that page was a banner for a contest running by Wikipedia during the month of May. When I clicked on the contest it indicated I had to join Wikipedia, which I did. When I went back to “The Paris Murder” page the contest banner was no longer there. Thus I apparently can’t take part in the contest. Goatdonkey (talk) 08:45, 26 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hello. I was advised to ask the matter here in general section. The tittle of the page was changed during the acceptance of the article. We think that the current tittle is not informative. The tittle seems to overlap with already existing tittles such as "Nanocluster" and "Thiolate-protected gold cluster". Furthermore, it is currently ambiguous and not totally aligned with the content. Is it possible to change the tittle to be more informative? We would suggest it to be "The crystal structures of monolayer-protected clusters" or something similar, because the crystal structures are the main focus of the page. Iridium27 (talk) 06:46, 27 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Iridium27 Technically, pages are retitled by making a WP:MOVE but in this case it does seem worth having a discussion first and the logical place for that is on the Talk Page at the current title, using the process outlined for potentially controversial moves. My suggestion would be to call this a list article, since the text says This article is designed to be a list of known structures of MPCs and most of the content is indeed list-like. We certainly would not give it a title with the first word "The": see WP:DEFINITE. The relevant Project to alert to your discussion is Chemistry, at WT:CHEM. See WP:CANVASS for how to do that. Silence on template clarification proposal[edit]

On May 11, I proposed a change to a label used by the Infobox_musical_artist template, in order to reduce ambiguity and confusion. (Origin => Launch location, with some alternate proposals) No discussion started, so a week later I invited discussion from the WikiProject:Infoboxes talk page. Another nine days have passed, still without discussion.

I'd be fine with a consensus against this change, indicating I was mistaken regarding its overall benefit. But total lack of discussion seems unfortunate, given how any reduction in confusion over a widely used template would provide a great benefit. Could one or more people here take a look, or point to a potentially interested community that should be invited to discuss? Thanks.

The Sapsby user has been writing for several weeks that the cappuccino was born in Austria. Almost all sources claim that the cappuccino originated in Italy; according to this source,[1], "Although the name 'Kapuziner' was used in Vienna, the actual cappuccino was invented in Italy, and the name was adapted to become 'Cappuccino.' It was first made in the early 1900a, shortly after the popularization of the espresso machine in 1901. The first record of the cappuccino we have found was in the 1930s.", cappuccino originated in Italy. I don't know what to do anymore; I wrote to him to first reach a consensus on the discussion page, but he continues undaunted. I'm not the only one who advised him to discuss first on the discussion page (https://en.m.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Cappuccino&diff=prev&oldid=1223987338). I would also like to talk about Eduadoros; on the bagna càuda page there are many open discussions about the origin, but this user decided to add his information without first reaching a consensus on the discussion page. Hi Jack,
Can you go the the "Talk" page. I have written to you several time but you don't answer. Now the version is quite neutral, I don't understand why you still delete all my modifications. It seems that you don't read. there are several points that I would like to change but I am waiting for your response. Eduadoros (talk) 11:53, 27 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@JackkBrown: Stop changing your edits after someone else has responded to them, as you did here. It's rude and contrary to WP:REDACT. If you really want to alter your text after somebody else has responded, then use {{deltext}} or {{ins}}. And make sure you follow WP:ES when you do so.
