DescriptionAlmost dome (elt-huedepohl-aug2023-drone1).jpg
English: This image, taken in early August 2023, shows the construction site of ESO’s Extremely Large Telescope (ELT). Located atop Cerro Armazones in the Chilean Atacama Desert, the telescope surpassed the 50% completed milestone in July 2023. Cerro Armazones is a mountain of an altitude of 3046 metres, and here its shadow is cast down over the surrounding mountains. As we can see in this picture, the dome of the telescope is taking shape, and when finished it will be about 80 metres high and weigh in at 6100 tonnes.
